Rishikesh is believed to be a gateway to the Char Dham Yatra (the pilgrimage to Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri). The town's name derives from Lord Vishnu, who appeared as "Rishikesh", or "Lord of the Senses," to a saint meditating here.
